Vent: My first attempt at a raised garden bed was a total washout
I built a 4x8 foot bed last spring with cheap pine boards and just filled it with bagged topsoil. After one heavy rain in May, the whole thing collapsed and washed away. My neighbor, who's been gardening for 30 years, saw the mess and said, 'Kid, you need drainage and real lumber.' I learned you can't skip the basics, even for a simple project. Anyone else have a garden fail that taught them a key step?

That neighbor sounds a bit dramatic. A collapsed garden bed is a bummer, but it's just some dirt and wood. You can rebuild it in an afternoon. People act like every project needs to be a forever thing. Sometimes cheap pine is fine if you just brace it better next time. It's a learning moment, not a life lesson.

Wait, did you say cheap pine? @rosel83, that stuff rots so fast though, doesn't it?
