I planned a surprise picnic for my friend group and only two people came

Learned that big gestures often flop without checking everyone's calendar first.

I used to swear by surprise events as the ultimate friend move. Your picnic situation completely flipped my opinion on that. Now I realize asking about schedules beforehand is the kindest thing you can do. It saves the host from stress and guests from awkward last-minute cancellations. Group hangs should be about fun, not frustration, and a simple calendar check makes all the difference!

Ever think surprise events just set everyone up to fail? Seems like @blairm35 figured out the simple fix everyone misses.

Oof, that's a brutal letdown. Surprises are fun until you realize everyone's schedule is a mess. I learned the hard way after organizing a last-minute game night that nobody could make. Now I always send a quick text asking about free days first, it just works better.
