My big plan to fix the garage door opener went south fast

I thought I could just replace the chain myself last Saturday, watched a video and everything. Got the new part from the hardware store for $45, took the old one off no problem. When I tried to put the new chain on, I must have messed up the tension because it jumped the sprocket and now the whole motor sounds like it's grinding rocks. My neighbor came over and said I probably need a whole new unit now. Has anyone tried to fix a Genie screw drive model after a mistake like this, or is it a lost cause?

That sound just means the travel limits need resetting, like the_ivan said.

Man, that "grinding rocks" sound is the WORST. I had the same thing happen on my old Genie. You can totally reset the travel limits and re-seat the screw drive, it's not a lost cause.
