Showerthought: My plan to fix a friend's fence in Phoenix went sideways in one minute.

I had all the tools and a new bag of concrete mix, ready to reset the post, when my neighbor Frank walked over, pointed at the cracked wood, and said 'You're patching a rotten stump, kid.' He was right, the whole base was gone. Has anyone else had a simple fix turn into a much bigger project because you missed something obvious?

Yeah, Frank saved you a ton of work. Been there with a deck step. Thought I just needed new boards, but the whole stringer was mush. You gotta poke around with a screwdriver first, see if the wood is soft anywhere. If the base is gone, you're just buying time. Now you gotta dig out the old concrete, get a whole new post, the works. It's a weekend killer for sure.

Heard a saying once that the first sign of a big job is when you go to the store for just one thing. That fence post sounds exactly like that.
