I assumed card scrapers were pointless until a veneer repair showed their worth.

Yeah, that's the exact moment you get it. They seem like an old school thing until you hit some crazy grain that a plane just tears up. I keep one sharp and ready all the time now, not just for veneer. It's the only thing that tames wild figured maple without a huge fuss. What project made you pull yours out?

Yeah, that "exact moment you get it" thing... it's like finding the one weird tool in your kit you never thought you'd need. I had a cheap set of wrenches for years, then one day a fence hinge bolt was just a hair off standard size... suddenly that single oddball wrench was the only thing that worked. Makes you look at all the other "pointless" stuff differently.
