Old can of beans from 2019 taught me the dent test

Found a dented can of black beans in the back of my pantry, date said 2019, and I figured why risk it. Tried the trick of pressing the lid to see if it flexed or held firm, and that thing popped right back like a drum head. Anyone else test old cans with the dent and lid method before tossing?

And that's exactly why I think people are way too careful with canned goods. I've eaten beans from cans that were 5 years past the date and they were fine. The whole dent test thing is just another way for people to throw out perfectly good food because they're scared of nothing. If the can isn't rusty, leaking, or bulging, it's almost certainly safe. Companies put those best by dates on there for stock rotation, not because the food magically goes bad on day one. I've opened cans with dents so deep they looked like they'd been hit with a hammer and the beans inside were still good. You're better off just trusting your nose and eyes instead of some internet trick that's probably making you waste money.

Those deep dents ever cause any leaks or rust you didn't notice right away?
