Craigslist pickup that was supposed to be a bench but turned into a saga

Back in 2019, I found a used rack from a seller in Phoenix for $150. He said it was disassembled and ready to go, so I drove my old pickup 45 minutes to grab it. Got there and it was a pile of bolts and mismatched pipes he swore was a 'custom build' from his cousin. I spent three hours sorting through the junk before realizing I got played. Has anyone else rolled the dice on a gear deal that ended up being a headache instead of a steal?

Buddy of mine drove two hours to Tulsa once for a "full home gym setup" listed for $400. Turns out the guy was selling his stuff because he was moving and needed it gone fast. When my friend got there, half the weight plates were mismatched, one of the bar collars was cracked, and the bench had a weird wobble that you couldn't see in the pictures. He still bought it because he didn't want to drive back empty handed, spent the next month slowly replacing the janky parts. Those deals are always a gamble, but sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you get a pile of junk.

Respectfully, a gamble is only worth it if you actually check the stuff before you go. Taking a two-hour drive without asking for detailed pictures or a video is setting yourself up for disappointment. Spending a month fixing junk you didn't want just to avoid an empty truck bed doesn't sound like a win to me.
