TIL my garage door fix skipped a critical safety step

I tried to fix my garage door myself to save money. Got a cheap kit from the internet and watched a tutorial. Everything seemed okay until I hit the safety sensor part. It was frustrating, so I just wired around it to get the door moving. Now the door closes even if there's an object in the path. My neighbor's little boy often rides his bike in my driveway. I feel guilty knowing this could cause a serious accident. Fixing it properly will cost a lot more now. Not sure if I should come clean or just hope nothing happens.
