Found out my company charges clients $175 an hour for the work I do at $24
Saw the rate card on a shared drive my manager forgot to lock down, and I have been doing the math all week on what a solo version of this could bring in. Anyone here made the jump from employee to freelance in the same field, and how did you figure out your own rate without scaring off every client?
Ouch, that gap is brutal to see in black and white. I remember a buddy finding out his shop billed him out at 3x his pay and he just sat in his truck for an hour before going home. The worst part is it makes you question every project you busted your butt on. Take a breath before you do anything, because that anger can push you into a jump you're not ready for yet. The math looks amazing until you add up your own taxes, insurance, slow months, and all the unpaid hours chasing leads.
