I ignored the "raise your rates" advice and cut my prices instead, made $4,100 in 6 months
Everybody in the side hustle world says charge more, like it's some law of nature. I run a small moving company in Dayton and for a year I chased bigger jobs with bigger quotes and got maybe one yes out of ten. So I flipped it and started quoting the small stuff nobody wants, single room moves, just a couch, a dorm run for $95 flat. My acceptance rate went from about 10% to 70%, and those little jobs kept landing me referrals to the big ones anyway. Six months in, the small jobs alone brought in $4,100 I would have never seen. Charging less sounds like losing, but volume and the referral chain beat a fancy price tag for me. Has anyone else gone backwards on pricing and actually come out ahead?
Whoa, hold on, I have to disagree here. What you did was not really "cutting your prices" in a bad way, you just found a different market that the big guys ignored, and that is smart. But the trap is that small jobs eat up your whole day just like big ones do, so if you are running a crew and a truck, that $95 couch move can end up costing you money once you add gas and time. The referral chain working out is great, but I would be careful about locking in low flat rates that do not leave room for stairs, tolls, or a job running long, because that is where the "charge more" advice actually comes from.
