A coworker's throwaway line about my woodworking bench finally got me back in the shop
Last Tuesday I was cleaning out my garage and my neighbor Steve walked by, saw my half-built workbench sitting under a tarp for 8 months, and said "you know, that bench isn't going to finish itself." It hit me harder than any nagging from my wife. That bench has been stalled since February because I kept waiting for the perfect hardwood and the exact joinery setup. I spent that evening just sanding the top I already had, and I realized 80% of my projects die because I wait for ideal conditions instead of working with what's in front of me. Has anyone else found a random comment from someone outside your hobby gets you moving again faster than all your own planning?

Why is it that a total stranger can say one thing and it lights a fire, but our own plans just sit there collecting dust? Your neighbor basically did what a coach does, he said the obvious thing out loud and let you hear how silly the waiting had gotten. I have done the same thing with a fence gate I put off for two years because I wanted cedar and a fancy latch, then one day my brother in law looked at it and laughed. I ended up using pressure treated lumber and a cheap hinge, and it has held up fine for six years now. The perfect version of a project is usually the enemy of the finished version, and nobody ever compliments you on the wood you were waiting to buy. That Steve guy owes you a beer, or maybe you owe him one.
