Lost 6 months of edits when my backup drive failed at a coffee shop in Austin
I was at Epoch Coffee near North Loop finishing the last chapter of my novel and hit save like normal. Five minutes later the file wouldn't open, and my external hard drive made that clicking sound before going silent. Turns out the drive had been failing for weeks and my cloud sync was off, so I lost everything since December. Do most people here keep local copies on two separate drives, or is that overkill for a hobby project?
Did you ever get any of it back from temp files or autosave? I had a drive die on me last year and lost about three months of freelance work, and now I keep one copy on my laptop and one on a cheap SSD that stays in my desk drawer. Two drives might sound like overkill for a hobby project, but after you lose stuff once it stops feeling that way, take that with a grain of salt though since I'm no tech guy.
Take that with a grain of salt though since I'm no tech guy" made me laugh because the guy who lost three months of freelance work is somehow the voice of reason here. I did poke around the temp files and autosave folders, and let me tell you, that was a fun hour of my life I'll never get back. Found one partial file that opened to about four lines of text and then a screen full of those little diamond question mark symbols. Real heartwarming stuff. So no, the files are gone gone. Your drawer SSD plan sounds smart though, and honestly after losing a project you put months into, one backup starts feeling like walking a tightrope with no net.
