Finally got my post-hole digger technique down after that mess on Juan Tabo

Used to just hack at the dirt and get stuck every foot, but now I soak the spot overnight and use a digging bar first. Anyone else have a trick for getting through our caliche without wrecking your back?

Honestly, the real trick is knowing when to quit and rent a small auger. Soaking helps, but some of that caliche is basically rock. Spending fifty bucks to save a weekend and your spine is a no-brainer.

Man, that's the kind of advice I needed about five years ago. Used to be all pride and a shovel, thinking renting was for people who couldn't hack it. Then I hit a patch of what felt like solid concrete and my back disagreed with my life choices for a week. You're totally right, some ground just laughs at water and muscle. That fifty bucks isn't a cost, it's an investment in not walking like a robot for days.
