My neighbor Bob tried to fix his own water heater and flooded the alley
Bob was so sure he could swap out the pressure relief valve himself after watching a 5 minute video. He didn't shut the main line off first and water shot straight through his kitchen wall into the alley behind my fence. Anyone else have a DIY disaster story from a neighbor in the North Valley?

Doesn't it feel like a lot of people skip the most basic safety step and just assume they're an expert after a quick youtube tutorial? It's like that whole "I saw it on the internet so I can do it" mindset takes over common sense, and then something like a flooded alley happens. I've noticed this same pattern with folks trying to fix their car's brakes or even just hanging a heavy shelf, they jump right in without reading the instructions or turning off the power first.

That whole thing with Bob is exactly what I see all the time now. People watch a three minute tutorial and suddenly think they're a licensed plumber, electrician, or mechanic. It's like the internet gave everyone just enough confidence to be dangerous but not enough knowledge to actually do the job right. My neighbor across the street tried to rewire a ceiling fan after watching a video and nearly burned his garage down because he mixed up the neutral and hot wires. The bigger pattern I notice is that nobody reads manuals anymore or takes the time to understand the basics before jumping in. It's not just home repairs either - I see people doing this with their own health, their finances, and even their relationships. Common sense and humility about what you don't know seem to be getting rarer every year.
