My plumber friend in Albuquerque said my water heater install was missing a drip pan

He pointed out that my basement floor could get damaged if it ever leaked. I added a 24 inch pan under it the next day. What other small details do you guys check on a water heater job?

Ever check the pressure relief valve pipe? That little pipe on the side. It should point straight down and end a few inches from the floor, not just aim at the wall. I saw one that was piped up and over, dripping rusty water right down the drywall. Also, make sure the flue pipe is sealed up tight where it connects. You can get a nasty draft of fumes otherwise.

Check the flue pipe seal with a mirror and a flashlight to see the top connection. @betty_barnes is totally right about the draft, that's how carbon monoxide sneaks in. What's the best sealant for that joint, high temp silicone or furnace cement? I've seen both fail if the pipe isn't secured first. A loose pipe will crack any sealant and leak fumes into your living space. That's a scary fix to miss during a basic check.
