Warning: picked a $3,400 swamp cooler replacement over fixing my old one and I have regrets
My ancient swamp cooler finally died two weeks ago here in Albuquerque, right in the middle of that 98 degree stretch. I got two quotes, one to patch the old unit for $600 and one for a whole new setup at $3,400, and I went with the new one because the guy scared me about parts. Well, they installed it and now the thing cycles on and off every 10 minutes and my electric bill already jumped $40. The install crew keeps telling me it's "normal for the new units" but my old one ran steady for 12 years. Did I get talked into the wrong call, or is this just how the newer models act?
