I finally tried a standing weekly call with my college buddy instead of texting all day, and I'm honestly shocked which one worked
My buddy Nate moved to Portland about two years ago and we tried to stay close the way we always did, which was firing off random memes and half-thoughts at each other all day long. Some weeks we'd send like 40 texts back and forth and I'd still feel like I had no clue what was actually going on in his life. Six weeks ago we started a standing Thursday call at 9pm, just 30 minutes, no agenda, and it's been night and day. On the calls he actually tells me about his job stuff and his girlfriend and the dumb things his dog did, and I get to ask real questions instead of reacting to a joke with a laughing emoji. The texting felt busy and constant but it was actually kind of empty, and the one short call a week feels like way more. We've missed two Thursdays so far and both times we just moved it to Friday, which took zero effort to figure out. Now I'm wondering if I should do the same thing with a couple other friends who live far away, or if that would turn into too many calls to keep up with. Anyone here do a standing call with friends? Does it hold up or does it start feeling like a chore after a bit?
40 texts back and forth and I'd still feel like I had no clue" hits way too close to home. My best friend and I have been sending each other the same three reaction gifs for like a year and I genuinely could not tell you what her job even is now. Maybe I should try the call thing before she forgets I exist.
