Compared that to my old group where we just waited for a wedding invite and now I haven't talked to half of them in 3 years, has anyone else found a simple habit that actually keeps old friends close?

Honestly, your buddy probably just found a fancy way to stay “in touch” without actually saying anything real. Meanwhile my old crew and I are like those toys where you pull the string and it says one canned phrase, then we go back in the closet for another year. I've got buddies I talk to once a year and we pick up like nothing changed, while other folks I text weekly feel like total strangers after a few months.
