Totally did that last year, missed a whole freelance payment.

inA friend's dad told me a story about a 1970s government project that got me digging
My uncle swore they changed the recipe for Twinkies in the 90s. The shelf life thing was a cover story. He might have been onto something.

inI used to avoid asking for help at work, now I schedule a weekly check-in with my boss.
Totally did the same thing. My boss actually prefers it now, says it keeps her from getting blindsided.

inShowerthought: Spent a whole day on a weird foundation corner in Cincinnati.
Had a sewer line detail from a 1992 plan set that was just flat wrong. The invert elevation they gave would have put the pipe three feet in the air. We dug the whole trench before we caught it, all because someone copied an old detail without checking. That kind of thing just kills your whole day, you have to stop everything and figure out a fix. Makes you triple check every single number from then on.

inHad to choose between a stable offer and a risky startup gig
Seen this happen a lot with people who leave boring office jobs. They take a hit on salary to go work at a brewery or start doing carpentry. The ones who stick with it usually end up happier, even if they don't get rich. Money's just one part of the job. Sounds like you're getting the other parts now, which is the real win.
