Saw a motion sensor pointed at a ceiling fan in a cafe in Tampa
I was grabbing coffee at this place on Dale Mabry last week and spotted their alarm panel near the back. One of the motion sensors was aimed right at a big ceiling fan that was on full blast. The installer must have put it up while the fan was off. I wonder how many false alarms they get on a windy day? Has anyone else seen a sensor placed in a spot that's just asking for trouble?

My old apartment had a sensor in the hallway that looked right at a vent. The air would blow a plant on a shelf. Never once had a false alarm in two years. Those things are smarter now, they can tell the difference between a big fan moving and a person walking. The Tampa cafe might be fine unless that fan is shaking the whole ceiling.

My cousin installs security systems and he told me about a job where they had to keep going back to a store because of false alarms. Turns out they had a sensor facing a window with thin blinds that would move from the AC. It took them forever to figure it out! Placing a sensor near something that moves is just a bad idea. That fan is definitely going to cause some issues, especially if it makes the whole light fixture sway a little. The cafe owners are probably wondering why their alarm goes off after hours for no reason.
