Rant: Took a fellow tech's advice on frost-free fridge door heaters and wasted a whole day
A guy I met at a supply house told me to just bypass the door heater on a Frigidaire frost-free to save time. I tried it on a job in Elmhurst last Tuesday and sure enough, the customer called back 9 hours later saying the door seal was frozen shut. I had to go back and wire the original heater back in, taking 2 extra hours. Has anyone else had a shortcut blow up in their face like that?

That "shortcut will save time" advice gets me every time too. It's like when I try to take a faster route through the parking lot and end up stuck behind someone backing out of a spot. Sometimes the long way is just the long way for a reason, your mileage may vary of course.

Got a buddy named Dave who tried the same trick on a Kenmore he was fixing for his sister. He thought he was being clever bypassing the defrost timer because it was acting up and he didn't have a replacement on the truck. Fast forward to the next morning and his sister called screaming that her freezer was a solid block of ice and all her meat was ruined. Dave had to drive back out there with a hair dryer and spend three hours melting everything down while his sister stood there giving him the silent treatment. He said he learned that day that shortcuts in this trade just make you pay double later.
