A climber told me my pruning cuts were too flush and it changed how I run my saw
I was doing a big oak removal in Rochester last spring and a guy I hired on for the day watched me make a few cuts and said flat out, "You're cutting into the collar, that's why your wounds aren't closing." I had been running my saw tight to the trunk for 6 years because that's how the old timer who trained me did it. I went home and looked at some of my past jobs and sure enough, a bunch of them had that dark ring where the tree was struggling to seal over. Now I leave the branch collar alone and make my cut just outside the swelling, even if it looks like a stub to me at first. My removal cuts barely changed but my pruning work looks way cleaner after a year. Anybody else get called out on something you thought you had down cold?
Did you notice the cuts callous over faster on the smaller stuff too, like 2 inch limbs? I started leaving that collar alone on everything and even my maples and cherries seal up way better than they used to.
