Saw a huge old oak with a concrete fill in a park in Savannah

I was driving through Forsyth Park yesterday and saw this massive live oak. The main trunk had a big cavity that was filled with concrete, like a solid gray plug. It looked really old, maybe from the 70s or something. Some guys there said it was a standard way to stop rot back then, but it seems like it would just trap moisture now. Has anyone else run into this and had to deal with it?

Honestly that concrete thing is everywhere. Tbh it's like the old fix for everything, from trees to sidewalks, and it always causes more problems later.

My neighbor did that to a tree root and it just heaved the whole slab in a year. @sethtorres is right, it never ends well.

Yeah, it's a total old-school fix. We chipped ours out and packed the cavity with gravel for drainage instead.
