Am I the only one who just let my freezer turn into a snow bank for two years?
So my wife finally got fed up with our garage freezer last month and asked why there was what looked like a glacier growing on the back wall, and I honestly had no answer. I had been yanking the door open and slamming it shut for close to two years without once thinking about the seal, and it turns out the gasket was so shot that warm air was getting in and freezing solid every time the compressor kicked on. A repair guy quoted me $280 to swap it out, which felt steep, so I watched a video and did it myself for $34 in parts. Here's the part that got me though, I pulled out my old electric bill from a year ago and we were paying about $19 more a month back then. That is over $400 in power I burned just because I never once checked a rubber strip I walk past every single day. My question is where else am I doing this exact same thing, just ignoring something small while it quietly eats money? What is the dumb little thing around your house you let go way too long before someone finally pointed it out?

Man, that $400 is the part that stings, not the repair. And you're right, the cheap fix usually pays for itself fast, it's just the noticing that's hard.
