TIL $80 on 'magic' plant fertilizer was just expensive water

I bought this organic liquid fertilizer from a local garden shop in Portland for $80, swearing it would fix my yellowing tomato leaves. Turns out the NPK numbers were basically the same as the $5 stuff at the hardware store, and my plants looked identical after a month. Anyone else get burned by fancy plant products that don't do anything different?

You're missing the whole point of stuff like that. That $80 organic liquid is often made with specific microbial blends and trace minerals you just aren't getting from the cheap synthetic stuff. It's like complaining that craft beer is just expensive water because it's mostly water at the end of the day. Maybe your garden soil is already healthy enough to not need those extras. But for someone growing in truly dead dirt or weird pH water, that boutique stuff can actually wake up the soil biology and make a real difference over a full season, not just one month.
