Tried asking my HVAC guy for a second opinion on the furnace quote

The repair shop down the street said I needed a whole new unit for $4,800. My HVAC guy spent twenty minutes on the phone with me and talked me through just replacing the igniter for $180. Has anyone else saved big by getting a second opinion on home repairs before committing?

The $4,800 quote sounds like the classic "we don't want the job but we'll take it if you're desperate" price. I had a plumber try to sell me a whole new water heater once, then my regular guy just replaced a $40 thermocouple. Took him twenty minutes too. Always get the second quote, but make sure you're asking a shop that actually does maintenance work, not just installs. The big box outfits push replacements because that's where their profit is. A good independent guy will tell you straight up if it's worth fixing or not.
