My old boss in Charlotte told me my welds looked like bird poop

He pulled me aside after a job on a 2018 F-150 bed and said I was moving too fast, not letting the puddle form right. I started counting to three between each tack, and my welds got way cleaner. How do you guys keep your speed right on thin panel work?

Honestly that bird poop comment hits home. My first welding teacher used to say my beads looked like a toddler squeezed a tube of caulk. He made me run beads on scrap for a whole week just focusing on the sound, that steady bacon sizzle. Tbh I still hum a stupid song in my head sometimes to keep the rhythm right, especially on thin stuff. It's all about finding your own little trick to not rush.

What song do you hum? I used to whisper "slow down you idiot" to myself over and over like a crazy person. My beads looked like a string of lumpy rocks until I figured out my own weird trick.
