Is a $1500 scan tool worth it or just a fancy paperweight?

I splurged on a high end scanner for my shop about 8 months ago, thinking it would pay for itself. It nailed a weird ABS issue on a 2018 F-150 that had me stumped for two days, so that alone felt like a win. But then it sat in the drawer for weeks, and my $80 basic reader handled 90% of the daily oil change codes and brake resets just fine. Some of the guys swear you need the pricey stuff for modern modules, but others say it's just bragging rights. I'm on the fence about whether I'd drop that cash again, what's your take on expensive diagnostic gear vs. the cheap stuff?

Ha, totally get it. My fancy one paid for itself on a weird BMW issue but then it just collects dust for weeks, and honestly my cheap reader does the same job for most of my daily work. I'd probably just rent the expensive one next time instead of buying it.

When you say you'd rent the expensive one, do you mean like a daily rate from an auto parts place, or borrowing from a friend who has one collecting dust? I've never actually rented a scanner myself, so I'm curious if the cost per day is worth it for a one-off job or if you just ended up paying twice anyway.
