TIL that denying my aunt a loan saved my emergency fund

People always say you should give family money without question, but I think that's wrong. When I told her I couldn't help this time, she got upset, but my savings are still intact.

You're right about not giving family money without question. In my experience, people skip over how a clear "no" can actually help the relationship long term. When you set a real boundary, it stops the slow building of quiet anger that happens when you lend money but feel used. Your aunt might be upset now, but she knows exactly where you stand, and that's a different kind of trust. It's better than you saying yes while secretly counting the days until you get paid back.

Wait, have you ever caught yourself holding onto that quiet anger she mentioned? I always thought saying no was mean, so I'd say yes but feel bitter later. Reading your post made me see that the bitterness actually hurts the relationship more over time. Now I get that a clean no might sting at first, but it doesn't leave that hidden mess. It really changed how I see setting those hard lines.

Honestly, I keep a simple rule now. If it would make me mad if they never paid it back, I just don't give the loan.
