Update: Finally had that talk with my dad about loaning him $200 last March
I just straight up said 'I need the money back by Friday or I can't cover my rent' and he actually paid me the full amount yesterday, has anyone else had a direct approach work better than dancing around it?

Used to think beating around the bush was better. Wrong. Straightforward is the only way.

Read something the other day about how people have different processing speeds too. Some folks need time to turn stuff over in their head before they can even hear what you're saying. If you rush in with the blunt truth before they've even caught up to where you're at, they're gonna shut down. Saw a video where a therapist explained it like this - people hear you best when they feel safe, and being too direct too fast doesn't feel safe to everyone. It's about their readiness, not your need to get it all out there. So yeah, straightforward works but only when the other person is actually in a place to take it in.

Used to think beating around the bush was better" - yeah I get that. But here's something I dont see anyone talking about: being too direct too fast can actually backfire. Like when you're talking to someone who's still processing something, hitting them with the straight truth right away just makes them defensive. The trick is reading the room first, then being direct when they're actually ready to hear it. Otherwise you're just yelling into the void while they tune you out.
