Got turned around on the High Sierra Trail near Hamilton Lake

My map got soaked and the trail markers were faint. I backtracked to the last clear creek crossing and used my compass to reorient, adding about two hours to the day. Anyone have a better method for navigating when the trail just disappears?

Compasses are basically useless these days.

Useless? Hardly. My phone battery dies all the time out hiking, and a compass doesn't need a signal or a charge. It's a basic backup that always works. People get lost way too often relying only on tech that can fail. That little magnetic needle is still a lifesaver.
