Free range vs run: I switched after 2 weeks and the eggs got better

I kept my hens in a 6x8 run for their first year, thought it was plenty. Then I let them out for 30 min a day after work and the yolks went from pale yellow to deep orange in like 10 days. My neighbor thinks I'm crazy for chasing them back in at dusk but the difference is obvious. Anyone else notice a big change after giving their flock more space?
