PSA: I spent 6 hours fixing a garage door that just needed a $12 bracket

I replaced the torsion springs, the rollers, and the opener gear assembly on my garage door over in Mesa, and it still would not close right. Turns out the whole mess was a bent bottom bracket that I could have swapped out in 20 minutes for twelve bucks. I wasted a Saturday and about $140 on parts I did not need. Now I check the cheap stuff first before I start throwing money at a problem. What is your worst case of fixing the wrong thing first?

Wait, you replaced the torsion springs AND the opener gear assembly before checking the bracket? That is wild. Torsion springs alone can run you $100+ and they can literally kill you if you do it wrong, so the fact that you did all that for a $12 part is painful to read. Honestly I would have given up after the springs, that is a whole day of work right there. Ngl this makes me feel better about the time I swapped out my whole thermostat because my AC was acting up and it turned out to be a dirty filter.
