Just switched my mortgage from a big bank to a local broker and saved $120 a month.
The broker in Tampa shopped my rate across 5 lenders and found a deal my old bank said didn't exist.

Big banks often just push their own products, not the best ones.

But they have to stand behind those products, so there's a real incentive to make sure they actually work for people.

Remember my buddy who went in for a mortgage? The bank guy spent the whole meeting pushing their branded insurance package. He had to ask three times to just see the basic loan rates. Felt like they were selling him a car, not helping him buy a house. He walked out and got a way better deal somewhere else.
