A client said my payment terms were confusing and they were spot on
I sent my standard invoice with net 30 terms to a new client in Austin. They replied asking if that meant 30 days from the invoice date or from the project end date, and if weekends counted. I realized my boilerplate text was vague. I changed my invoice template to clearly state 'Payment due 30 calendar days from the invoice date shown above'. Has anyone else had to clarify their payment language after a client pointed it out?

Oh man, that hits close to home. My old invoice just said "net 15" and I once had a client pay me exactly 15 business days later (you know, like three weeks). I felt so silly for not spelling it out. Now my terms are a full sentence that even my mom could understand.

That "full sentence" idea from patricia42 is smart. I used to think short terms looked more professional, but clear beats clever every time. Now my invoices leave no room for interpretation.
