My neighbor's kid just explained 'buy now, pay later' to me and I felt ancient

I was helping him with a project and he needed a part. He said he'd just use a BNPL app and pay it off over a few weeks. I asked if he was worried about interest, and he looked at me like I had three heads. 'It's not a credit card, it's just... splitting it up.' He said he does it for stuff under $100 all the time. I've been so focused on credit card rewards and APRs that I completely missed how normal this has become for a whole generation. They don't see it as debt, just a payment method. Is this how checking accounts felt to people who only used cash?

Forget interest, does he even know about the late fees? Those things can be brutal if you miss a payment by a day. It's wild that they see zero percent financing on a $30 t-shirt as normal. Do you think this just trains them to accept monthly payments for every single thing in life?

Sounds like debt with extra steps.
