Warning: I just switched from a big bank to a local credit union
Last week, I was at the big bank branch downtown trying to get a simple fee waived. The manager said no, it was policy. Three years ago, I would have just accepted that. But my friend in Portland kept telling me about her credit union, so I opened an account there last month. They reversed the same fee over the phone in five minutes because I'm a new member. Has anyone else made a switch like this and noticed a real difference in how they treat you?

My neighbor switched to a credit union after her big bank charged a huge overdraft fee. She said the credit union actually called her to warn her before it happened, which saved her a ton of money. That kind of personal service seems to be the norm with them. It makes a huge difference when they see you as a person and not just an account number.

Hey @evangarcia, does your neighbor's credit union have any weird rules, like mine that still makes you use a passbook for savings?

Honestly, I used to think all banks were the same hassle. But my credit union gave me a free box of checks when I opened my account, just because I asked. My old bank would have charged me thirty bucks without blinking. It really is a different mindset.
