Checked out that new barber shop on 3rd Street in Austin
Went by The Razor's Edge yesterday. Old school vibe, tile floors, no loud music. Watched the guy do a hot towel straight razor shave start to finish. Took him 45 minutes. He charged $65. I've been doing them for years but I picked up a couple of hand movements I'd never seen before. Anyone else ever watch another barber and realize you've been doing something the hard way?

Buddy of mine watched a barber in Nashville do the same thing. He said the guy used this weird rolling motion with his thumb during the second pass and it made the whole thing look effortless. My friend tried it on his next client and said the guy nearly fell asleep in the chair because it was so smooth. He's been doing it that way ever since and swears his shaves are way more consistent now. It's CRAZY what you can pick up just by watching someone else for a few minutes.

Oh man that rolling thumb thing is legit. I watched a barber do the same move in Chicago once and it clicked instantly. The trick is you gotta keep your wrist loose and let the thumb do the guiding instead of forcing the razor with your whole arm. I started doing that on the second pass and my clients literally start talking slower and drifting off its wild. Small adjustments like that are game changers once you see them in person.
