Had a guy tell me last week that clipper guards are a crutch

An older barber at the shop in Austin said learning to freehand everything made him faster and better. I thought he was full of it until I tried skipping guards on a fade yesterday and got cleaner lines. Any barbers here ditch guards for good or am I overthinking it?

Using guards is fine but learning to freehand really does unlock a whole new level of blending, especially on those tricky crown areas.

Clipped a chunk out of my ear learning freehand. Never again.
