Bought a 98 Corolla for $1200 back in 2019 and put about $2k into it over four years, but the key for me was tracking cost per month. That car ran me $66 a month in parts and it never left me stranded, so I rode it till 240k miles. My line now is when a repair costs more than 3 months of what a car payment would be, or when the same system breaks twice, like my old Taurus that ate two transmissions in 18 months. The Toledo guy isn't wrong about tools eating you alive, but he's forgetting that a shop bill on a $1800 car is how people end up in a $400 monthly payment instead.
