That $400 smoker mod that turned my brisket into a doorstop

Bought one of those fancy PID controllers for my offset last month dropped about $400 on it. Thought it would fix my temperature swings but the thing glitched at hour 6 and the fire went out while I was sleeping. Woke up to a 130 degree brisket that was basically ruined. Anyone else had a pricey gadget backfire on them like that?

Got a buddy named Craig who bought a fancy pellet grill with all the wifi bells and whistles for like $800. He set it up for an overnight pork butt, went to bed thinking he was a genius. Woke up to find the auger had jammed at 3 AM, fire died, and his pork butt sat around 120 degrees for hours. He ended up having to throw the whole thing out and ordered pizza for his party. He still uses that grill but he sleeps on the couch next to it now with one eye open.

I mean come on, is it really that serious though? Yeah it sucks when a grill messes up but we're talking about pulled pork not like a life or death situation. Most people have woken up to a cold smoker or a failed cook at some point, it happens. If Craig is gonna sleep on the couch over a $50 pork shoulder that's a him problem not a grill problem.
