Found out our ice machine was moldy for 8 months at the diner in Springfield

Last Tuesday I was doing the deep clean at the diner and pulled off the ice machine cover. It was black inside. The last time anyone checked it was when the owner bought the place 8 months ago. I had to dump 50 pounds of ice and spend 3 hours scrubbing it with bleach. Now I check that thing every Sunday night before close. Has anyone else found nasty stuff in their ice machine after management said it was fine?

tbh that's absolutely disgusting, I feel sick just reading about how long that mold was building up. I've seen kitchens do the whole "it's fine" thing and it's never actually fine when you look closer. glad you caught it before some customer got real sick.

@wren_thomas16 you are right to be grossed out. I bought a cheap plastic scoop and a spray bottle of vinegar and now I hit the inside of our ice machine every Sunday before close. Takes ten minutes and keeps the black mold from ever coming back.
