Had a chat with a regular yesterday that totally shifted how I deal with angry customers

He used to work retail 20 years ago and said the people yelling at you aren't mad at you they're mad at the store but you're the only face they see. Ever since I heard that I stopped taking the insults personal and my shifts got way easier has anyone else found a mental trick that actually works?

Question how much this mental trick really matters sometimes. Sure it might help you get through a shift, but is a stranger's bad mood really worth that much of your headspace? Your mileage may vary but I've found just shrugging it off completely saves more energy than trying to figure out why they're upset.

Read a psychology article once that said most angry people are really just embarrassed or scared underneath all that yelling. Once I started thinking "they're probably just having a awful day" instead of "why are they attacking me" it changed everything for me too.
