PSA: Self-checkout lanes are not faster than a real cashier, period.

I ran a register at a Target in Columbus for 2 years and watched people line up 8 deep at the self-checkout while I cleared 3 customers in the same time because most of them can't even figure out how to scan a bag of grapes, so why do we keep pretending the machines are better?

Man, you hit the nail right on the head with this one. Watched the same thing happen at the grocery store near my house where people will stand there staring at the screen like it's a spaceship control panel while a cashier could have them through in thirty seconds flat. They act like scanning a banana is advanced rocket science when it's really not that hard, but the machines just can't handle a bruised apple or a bag of oranges without throwing a fit. All that time saved disappears the second the thing starts screaming "unexpected item in bagging area" and you're stuck waving your hands around like a fool. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather wait two minutes in a real line than fight with a robot that has zero patience for my groceries.
