An old timer in the shop told me I was over-tightening bottom brackets

He saw me cranking on a Shimano BB-UN300 and said, 'You're gonna strip the threads, kid. Just snug it up and a quarter-turn more, that's it.' I was using way too much force, thinking it needed to be super tight. I've been doing it his way for about five years now and haven't had a single creak or failure. How do you guys gauge the right torque for press-fit or threaded bottom brackets?

Had the same thing happen with an old mechanic. He grabbed my wrench and showed me the "just tight enough" feel. Bought a torque wrench after that for press fit stuff, total game changer.

Listen to the old guy. For threaded, his quarter-turn past snug is perfect. Press-fit is a different animal, you need a proper torque wrench. I set my Shimano press-fit cups to the spec printed on the box, usually around 35 Nm. Guessing on press-fit gets you creaks and walks out cups. A cheap beam-type torque wrench from the auto parts store is way better than feeling it out.
