Had a customer's vintage Campagnolo derailleur hanger snap clean off mid-adjustment in the stand. The debate: do you weld it, source a NOS replacement, or tell them it's a wall ornament now?

Ever try a local machinist? Had a buddy fix a snapped brake mount that way. Cost less than finding old stock and it's still rolling.

Man, that's the classic "old thing breaks" problem in a nutshell. It's everywhere, from bikes to old houses to vintage electronics. You start a simple fix and suddenly you're down a rabbit hole of impossible parts and expensive craftsmen. Feels like modern life is just duct tape holding together a bunch of stuff that wasn't built to last this long. Makes you wonder how much of our time and money goes into propping up the past instead of just building something new that works.
