Just spent 6 hours debugging a missing semicolon in my abandoned game project

I was stuck on a Unity build error for my 3D platformer that's been sitting untouched since March, and it turned out the issue was a single semicolon missing in a script I wrote at 2 AM last winter. The error message pointed to the wrong line entirely, so I wasted 4 hours rewriting systems that were fine before I noticed the real problem in a totally different file. Has anyone else had a compiler throw you off the scent and cost you way more time than it should have?

That time a plumber told me my vent pipe was fine when it clearly wasn't

I had a leak in my bathroom wall last summer and called a guy out. He looked at the vent pipe on the roof, said "looks good to me" and left after 10 minutes. A week later I tore the drywall off myself and found a crack in the pvc joint that was dumping water down the studs. He charged me $150 for that look and I still had to fix it myself. Anyone else had a pro brush off something obvious?

That customer who refused to pay because I fixed his fridge in 5 minutes

Had a call last Tuesday in Austin for a fridge not cooling. Got there, found the condenser fan blade was just stuck on a bit of ice from a slow defrost drain. Took me maybe 5 minutes to clear it with a heat gun and some compressed air. Guy looked at his watch and said "$89 for 5 minutes? That's robbery." Tried explaining he was paying for the knowledge, not the time, but he wasn't having it. Ended up calling his wife and she actually apologized for him and paid me. Anyone else run into people who think you should only charge by the hour?

TIL a single storm can drop over 500 pounds of debris from one mature oak

I was reading through some case studies from the ISA website last night and stumbled on a stat that blew my mind. They tracked a severe thunderstorm that hit a neighborhood in Raleigh and measured debris from one 80-foot oak at 530 pounds of limbs and leaves. That's like a quarter ton of material coming off one tree in maybe 20 minutes of wind. I've cleaned up plenty of storm jobs but never thought to actually weigh the debris from a single tree. Has anyone else seen numbers like that from their own jobs or is this an outlier?

My worst week on the job last fall in Baton Rouge had me ready to walk

I was on a three week turnaround at a chemical plant and by day 4 it all fell apart. We had a 5 ton vessel that was out of level by almost an inch after the concrete guys poured the foundation wrong. Took me and my fitter buddy two full shifts with shims and a torch to get it squared up. Then the inspector flagged our welds on a 2 inch nozzle because he said the bevel angle was off by 3 degrees. I had to grind out and reweld 8 joints in 95 degree heat with a fan blowing dust in my face. Have any of you had a job where everything that could go wrong actually did?

I used to think quitting a bad job was the only answer, but a talk at a diner in Akron made me see it differently.

I was having coffee with a friend who's been a line cook at the same place for 8 years, and he said 'I'm not stuck, I'm just saving up for my own food truck on my own terms.' It made me realize that sometimes staying put and quietly planning your escape can be smarter than just walking out with no plan. Does anyone else think there's value in using a dead end job as a stepping stone if you have a clear goal?

Just realized I've been wiring my three-way switches wrong for years...

I was trying to install a new light fixture in my hallway and the traveler wire kept sparking when I tested it. I've done maybe a dozen of these in my own house and for friends, always using the same method from a YouTube video I saw back in 2019. The tip-off was when my voltage tester beeped on the neutral screw... that's when I knew I had the common and traveler wires swapped at every single switch. Has anyone else had to go back and rewire a whole house because of one bad habit?

My neighbor insisted I soak my moonflower seeds in warm water before planting

She told me they would sprout in half the time, so I tried it with a batch last spring. After a week, the soaked ones were already pushing up while the dry ones hadn't moved. I got blooms a full month earlier on my patio. Has anyone else tried this trick with other stubborn seeds?
