Had to choose between a full rebuild or just a new chain on a worn drivetrain
A customer brought in a 3-year-old commuter bike with a cassette that was pretty far gone but they only wanted to spend $40. I could either just replace the chain and hope it held, or tell them they needed a new cassette and chain for about $90. I went with the cheap option and the new chain skipped within a week. How do you guys handle that conversation when the customer's budget just doesn't match the repair?

Yeah, the "budget doesn't match the repair" thing is the worst. Been there so many times. You try to explain the whole drivetrain wear thing, but they just hear the price. Put the cheap chain on knowing it'll fail. Then they come back mad at you, like it's your fault. Makes the whole job feel pointless.

The real trick is cheap chains usually skip on worn sprockets.
