What's the safest way you all handle a compressor you suspect is locked up? Just kill the breaker from the panel first?

Had a 2008 Civic with a seized axle nut, and everyone in the bay said to just hammer it with the big impact. I set up my 1/2 inch click-type torque wrench with a breaker bar instead, and it came off clean without rounding anything.
