Got a 4 inch rock stuck in the pump intake near Cape May last Tuesday

Was working the Delaware Bay side and hit a patch I should have seen on the sonar. Heard that grinding noise and knew I was in for it. Had to shut down for 2 hours to pull the intake grate and fish it out with a crowbar. Any of you guys run mesh screens over your intakes or just rely on the grate?

Man, that's a rough break. I put some heavy duty mesh screen over my intake after I sucked up a bunch of eelgrass last summer, and it's been a lifesaver since. Just gotta make sure to clean it off every couple of trips or it'll clog up and choke your flow anyway.

Yeah I actually read somewhere that some guys are running those little stainless steel mesh cups over their intakes now, looks cleaner than strapping screen on with zip ties lol. @joseph_black that's smart though, beats pulling the whole lower unit apart for grass wrap every weekend. Just make sure you check it mid-day if you're running in real weedy spots, I learned that one the hard way on a long trip.
